Jakki Mickle (JAX)
Born in Nantwich, Cheshire and when 3 weeks old went to Anglesey, where I grew up on the family farm, surrounded by a variety of farm animals and nature. I used to ride the cows up from the fields to the milking parlour!. My first exploits into Art were primitive scrawlings all over the bedroom walls, (probably inspired by hours of watching my Mum paint!), and since then I havent really looked back ! I attended Bangor Technical college to do a foundation course where I was tutoured by Peter Prendergast, a well known Welsh landscape artist, and Kyffin williams associate. This was followed by a degree course at ‘Falmouth School Of Art and Design’, Cornwall .
Inspired by the wonderfull land and seascapes , I started using only natural substances to paint with- ranging form cow dung -great greens !!-berries muds and clays. I also worked on a large scale.Since leaving Falmouth, I entered into various forms of employment…garden centers, landscape gardening, general gardening, (I have a garden design qualification), doing sign writing, decorating/ interior design etc…but always using painting ‘in the background’, which included private portrait commissions and painting the backdrops for ‘The Nantwich Players’ theatre group. I also painted a large number of Murals…some for private houses, some for ‘Stapeley water gardens’ - as backdrops to the tropical animals- Macaws, frogs, sharks, snakes and crocodiles.
My position as a decorator then became redundant and so I retrained to do commercial painting restoration, and at the same time turned to creating my own large scale paintings , taking my inspiration from my background on the farm, and on the area in rural wales where I live, and so appeared the ‘real but quirky’ paintings, which I paint to express and spread happiness to others..My black and white friesians make people smile, as do the pigs, horses, giraffes etc. Mullers (the yogurht producers) now own several cow canvass’, local farmers have some, private customers for their childrens rooms, others because they wanted something a bit different and quirky…. I paint them because each one is unique, every expression is different, and I have to say I love what I am doing. What better reason could there be ?
